SecurSpace’s Bobby Strenk, Senior Director – Marketplace, joined the Let’s Talk Supply Chain podcast to share our story and how we’re improving intermodal equipment storage for drivers, trucking companies, and the storage yards that serve them.

Challenges in the Logistics Industry

The logistics and supply chain industry faces a shortage of secure, safe and accessible storage space near major transportation hubs.

Bobby highlights two critical challenges: a lack of industrial outdoor storage in port markets and urban areas, and a scarcity of overnight truck parking near highways. These challenges lead to high storage costs, inflexible leases, and safety concerns for cargo and drivers.

  1. Lack of storage in port markets and urban areas: “In large urban areas, development is focused on lifestyle… people want to see restaurants, apartments, retail – versus yards that can store containers, trailers and trucks. And that lack of supply equates to high prices for storage… and it’s extremely inflexible for the motor carriers and shippers.”
  2. Overnight truck parking crisis: When the only option is to park along the roadside overnight, there are serious risks around cargo theft and driver safety. “Drivers are responsible for moving the nation’s goods. Do we really want to let those drivers park on the side of the roads, off interchanges and on ramps? That lack of parking is inhibiting drivers having a safe place to work and operate.”

Launch & Growth of SecurSpace

SecurSpace, true to its name, is a marketplace connecting those in need of storage capacity with those who have a surplus of space.

Launched in 2018 primarily focused on the Los Angeles  market, the platform gained momentum during the disruptions caused by the pandemic, addressing the surge in demand for yard storage.

“Motor carriers, shippers, 3PLs, anyone and everyone had a need for yard storage, and supply was at historic lows.”

SecurSpace’s network now includes over 100,000 truck, trailer & container storage spaces across the US – from standard drop yards to CTPAT certified facilities.

How SecurSpace Helps

From a buyer's perspective, the platform simplifies the process in four easy steps:

  1. Search – by location and filter by required security features
  2. Book – directly through the marketplace
  3. Pay – with your preferred payment
  4. Park – immediately following the booking requests approval

Buyers gain access to a growing nationwide network (250+ locations), flexible arrangements, and real-time availability. The platform empowers motor carriers, shippers, and 3PLs to adapt to changing lane volumes, disruptions, and storage needs, avoiding the constraints of traditional leases and storage procurement models.

A majority of necessary real estate footprint to close the parking and storage supply gap already exists. The problem is not so much a capacity issue but a visibility issue.

“You don’t need to build a new facility to create additional capacity – leverage what’s existing. If we, as a society, want to reduce our carbon footprint, and given that real estate is finite, wouldn’t you rather use what already exists?”
